Contactless payment does not always work on my terminal. Sometimes the terminal accepts contactless transactions, sometimes it doesn't. How can that be?
Here is the good news for you: It is not a defect in your terminal, but a security function that the card-issuing banks have deliberately installed. In order to make contactless payment more secure, the contactless function on the customer's card is blocked after a certain number of transactions or after a certain total turnover threshold has been exceeded. As a consequence, the customer has to enter his PIN when making the card transaction. The rule is that after either five transactions or amounts totaling more than EUR 150.00, the contactless function on the card is automatically blocked.
Here are the appropriate examples:
- A customer has already made four contactless payments with his card and now wants to make the fifth card transaction. For the fifth transaction, he has to enter his PIN.
- A customer has paid three times contactless with his card - two transactions for 49.99 EUR and one transaction for 35.00 EUR. The customer now wants to make a fourth transaction for EUR 22.50. Since the fourth transaction would exceed the total amount of all contactless transactions of EUR 150.00, the customer must enter his PIN for the fourth transaction. After successfully entering the PIN, the customer can make contactless payments for further transactions until the security rule takes effect.
