The variable memory capacity and processing ability of the ICC means that chip cards can be multi-functional. One card could operate as a credit card, a debit card and an electronic purse. Chips improve the management of loyalty programs and provide security for distance banking and remote payments, for example over the Internet The main reason for migrating to Chip technology is security. Ensuring the integrity of payment systems has always been a race between bankers and fraudsters which is why the three main payment card schemes Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) believe that the time has come to replace the magnetic-stripe technology by the Chip card technology to stay ahead of fraudsters. Certainly for a period of time Chip cards will continue to have a magnetic stripe on the back of the card until Chip terminals are fully deployed.

Migration to Chip technology means also a unique opportunity to offer a variety of value-added services, such as E-Purse, GSM and customer loyalty point management amongst others, on the same platform.

The Smart Card Solution in BankWORKS? provides a smooth transition into this new technology by providing Issuer and Acquirer modules that include:

        Card Personalization and Production

        ATM & POS Acquiring

        Own Authorization

        Back-Office Clearing & Settlement

All transaction formats is developed in line with the EMV standard.
